Classes & Talents
Warrior
Overview
Warrior is a melee class capable of DPS or tanking in WotLK 3.3.5a.
Specializations
Arms focuses on powerful weapon attacks, bleeds and control and is especially popular in PvP. Fury dual-wields and scales strongly with end-game equipment. Protection is the tank specialization.
Stats
DPS builds should first reach the appropriate Hit and Expertise targets, then value Strength, Crit and Armor Penetration according to the build. Protection aims for 540 Defense against raid bosses, then Stamina, Armor and avoidance.
Leveling
Arms and Fury are both practical leveling choices. Upgrade your weapon regularly because weapon damage strongly affects performance.
Level 80
Start with normal/heroic dungeons, emblems and reputations before moving into raids. Tanks should maintain a dedicated defensive set.
Paladin
Overview
Paladin can perform all three group roles: healer, tank and melee DPS.
Specializations
Holy heals, Protection tanks and Retribution deals melee damage. Paladins bring valuable blessings, auras and defensive utility.
Stats
Holy commonly values Intellect, Spell Power and Haste. Protection aims for 540 Defense for raid bosses, Stamina and defensive stats. Retribution prioritizes Strength, Hit and Expertise, followed by Crit.
Leveling
Retribution is the most straightforward questing choice. Protection can be efficient for frequent dungeon leveling.
Level 80
Choose a primary role and build a dedicated equipment set for it.
Hunter
Overview
Hunter is a ranged physical DPS class that fights alongside a pet.
Specializations
Beast Mastery emphasizes the pet, Marksmanship emphasizes ranged weapon attacks, and Survival uses traps and proc-driven gameplay.
Stats
Agility is highly valuable. PvE characters should reach the appropriate Hit cap before optimizing Attack Power, Crit, Armor Penetration and other secondary stats according to spec and gear.
Gameplay
Keep your pet trained and leveled, use the correct aspect and manage pet threat in groups. Ammunition is still part of 3.3.5a gameplay.
Level 80
Marksmanship and Survival are common PvE choices, although gear and raid composition affect the best option.
Rogue
Overview
Rogue is a melee DPS class built around Energy, combo points, stealth and poisons.
Specializations
Assassination emphasizes poisons and daggers, Combat is a strong PvE specialization centered on weapon attacks, while Subtlety provides mobility and control for PvP.
Stats
Agility, Hit and Expertise are important. After required caps, the value of Crit, Haste and Armor Penetration depends on the build.
Gameplay
Positioning, target uptime and correct poison use matter greatly. Use interrupts and defensive cooldowns rather than focusing only on damage.
Level 80
Use weapons appropriate for your specialization and consider weapon speed instead of comparing item level alone.
Priest
Overview
Priest can heal through Discipline/Holy or deal caster damage through Shadow.
Specializations
Discipline focuses on absorbs and mitigation, Holy provides flexible healing, and Shadow deals damage through DoTs and shadow spells.
Stats
Shadow reaches the appropriate Hit cap before optimizing Spell Power, Haste and Crit. Healers commonly value Spell Power, Intellect and Spirit/Haste depending on specialization and play style.
Leveling
Shadow is a comfortable solo-leveling choice. Discipline can work well when combining questing with dungeon healing.
Level 80
Do not assume Shadow and healing equipment are interchangeable; evaluate the stats required by your role.
Death Knight
Overview
Death Knight is a hero class that starts at a higher level and uses runes plus Runic Power.
Specializations
Blood, Frost and Unholy provide different damage and utility styles. In 3.3.5a a Death Knight can be built for DPS or tanking, but talents and equipment must match the role.
Stats
DPS values Strength and the appropriate Hit/Expertise caps. Tanks aim for 540 Defense for raid bosses, Stamina, Armor and other defensive stats.
Gameplay
Learn rune timing and avoid resource gaps that prevent important abilities.
Level 80
A DPS set does not become a proper tank set simply by changing talents; maintain dedicated defensive equipment.
Shaman
Overview
Shaman can be caster DPS, melee DPS or healer and provides group utility through totems.
Specializations
Elemental is caster DPS, Enhancement is melee DPS and Restoration is the healing specialization.
Stats
Elemental values Hit, Spell Power and Haste. Enhancement uses Agility/Attack Power, Hit and Expertise. Restoration values Spell Power, Haste and Intellect.
Gameplay
Adapt your totems to the group rather than using the same set in every situation.
Level 80
Maintain separate equipment sets when switching between Enhancement, Elemental and Restoration.
Mage
Overview
Mage is a ranged caster DPS class with crowd control, teleports and strong mobility.
Specializations
Arcane focuses on burst and mana management, Fire on crit/procs and high damage, while Frost provides excellent control and survivability.
Stats
For PvE, reaching the appropriate Hit cap is essential, followed by Spell Power and then Haste/Crit depending on specialization.
Leveling
Frost is very safe for leveling because of slows and control. Other specializations can be used for a more aggressive damage style.
Level 80
Do not sacrifice your Hit requirement merely for an item with a higher GearScore.
Warlock
Overview
Warlock is a caster DPS class using DoTs, demons and direct damage.
Specializations
Affliction emphasizes DoTs, Demonology emphasizes the demon and group utility, while Destruction focuses on direct damage and burst.
Stats
Spell Power and the appropriate Hit cap are key priorities; Haste and Crit then gain value depending on specialization.
Gameplay
Maintain DoTs efficiently and select the appropriate demon. Soul Shards remain part of 3.3.5a gameplay.
Level 80
Demonology can provide important raid utility, so specialization choice may also depend on group composition.
Druid
Overview
Druid is one of the most flexible classes: tank, healer, melee DPS or caster DPS.
Specializations
Balance is caster DPS, Feral covers Cat DPS and Bear tanking, and Restoration is the healing specialization.
Stats
Balance uses Hit, Spell Power and Haste. Cat values Agility and appropriate melee stats. Bear values Stamina, Armor and Agility. Restoration values Spell Power, Haste and regeneration.
Gameplay
Forms fundamentally change the character's role, so equipment must match the form and role being played.
Level 80
Dual specialization is very useful for Druids, but each serious role requires its own equipment.
